Safety Decking Explained

Safety Decking Explained

Since we started supplying safety decking, Network Scaffold Services have received plenty of enquiries from scaffold contractors look to hire our ‘crash decks’. The term ‘Crash Decking’ is commonly used by construction site professionals when describing fall safety solutions. The term implies there is going to be some kind of impact and it has become associated with the possibility of stopping a falling person or a crash or fall from height. How our safety decking works Network Scaffold‘s safety decks provide an internal fall prevention/work platform for traditional build and construction projects. Please note it is designed to prevent falls, not protect you against them. Our market-leading system is mats designed to mitigate the risk of injury to workers who may fall from heights up to 2.5 metres. Following a rigorous testing regime, our system will also comply with UK Health and Safety regulations. If a worker is on top of our platform they will be safe and secure and cannot fall. Falling from Height When thinking about a worker falling from a height it will be a completely different scenario if they fell onto a deck instead. While your body may experience a tremendous amount of g-force in a short space of time during an accident; this is greatly reduced by crash decking. The system is designed to flex and absorb some of the shock of falling objects and is not designed to protect a person from falling from a height. The more rigid the crash deck, the greater the G-force that would be exerted upon the worker. We have recently started offering safety decks plus plastic hoarding to help give our clients the complete selection of scaffold systems. Network Scaffold are renowned for top quality safety procedures, so investing in durable, multifaceted safety decks was a valuable venture to create the most efficient working environments on construction sites across Derby and the surrounding areas. Safety decks are a fall prevention work platform that protects site workers from any falls from height; which is the number one risk for scaffolders. They also provide a loading workable platform that is often necessary to complete a construction project. 5 Reasons to Choose Our Safety Decking 1. Reduce Installation and Dismantle Times – Traditional scaffolding tubular birdcages are more difficult to put up and take back down. Using safety decks can cut your installation and dismantling times by 70% (according to industry statistics) plus reduce the labour for staff and get the job done much quicker. 2. Ease Pressure on Building Areas – Decking solutions are extremely lightweight with any pressure they add to a build being minimal. You will also limit the weight on the level itself as it lowers the amount of loading required as this will be on deck instead. 3. Self-Contained – Safety decks are an entirely standalone piece of equipment and are completely self-supporting which ensures there is little disruption to your project when it is brought in and taken back out. 4. Installation Doesn’t Require Any Work at Height – One of the main reasons safety decks are used is to maximise safety on sites. Throughout both the installation and dismantle your workers won’t need to worry about working at height. 5. Increased Load Capacity – Internal decking increases your loading capacity meaning your workers can get on with their job with less risk attached to getting on and off the scaffold. The Diverse Uses of Safety Decking

Safety decking from Network Scaffold Services, are often utilised indoors to undertake repairs and redecorating work at ceiling height. These systems are almost always constructed on the inside of the new build properties so tasks such as installing floor joists, plaster boarding and painting ceilings can be completed safely and securely. Because they are internal deck scaffolds, safety decking is usually a lighter duty structure which means they can be built and dismantled quite quickly. Although there should still be full consideration for health and safety regulations. Trade contractors such as painters and joiners need to be assured of a safe working environment just as much as builders working on an open construction site. It is important to remember, this type of decking system needs to be built by qualified scaffolders. What Does Safety Decking Look Like? Safety decking needs to be tied or braced to the scaffolding to make sure that the top boards are stable. This system needs to be tested before it is used to ensure that it does not sway or list to the side. For a safety deck to be safe, close attention needs to be paid to the top work platform which should be built with no gaps. It is advisable that appropriate protective measures like toe guards or rails are included. This structure must offer an enclosed working area for contractors, avoiding any risk of falling through any gaps to meet industry standards. What is the difference between Safety Decking and a Work Platform?

What is the difference between Safety Decking and a Work Platform?

By on Dec 30, 2020 in Blog, Safety Decking |

Safety decking, sometimes referred to as a crash deck is meant as a temporary scaffolding platform that is used to stop falling objects during the demolition process. When it comes to working on scaffolding; there are two options for working at height – a work platform or safety decking supplied by Network Scaffold. If an employee is working on safety decking, they will not fall. If they were to fall onto a fall arrest bag, the bag will be cushioned which therefore makes the g force limited. The fall is not cushioned on typical decking and falling is still potentially dangerous. It is recommended that a falling person is not exposed to a force of more than 14g. An 80kg person falling as a deadweight from just one metre on to a safety deck that yields no more than 2cms will be exposed to a g force of 50g. The more rigid the safety deck, the greater the g force. If the deck only yields 1cm, the force is doubled to 100g. Safety Decking from Network Scaffold Services Network Scaffold has recently started supplying safety decks as an innovative fall prevention system plus a light-duty access platform. Our team of specialists have moved into the safety decking market recently with our systems being used for New Build construction sector.
