Hollywood and the exciting ever expanding world of scaffolding might seem worlds on paper. However, it might surprise you to know that there is an entire industry dedicated to the use of scaffolding in film and television.

Whilst you might not see Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise performing their latest stunt on some freshly laid safety decking; scaffold erection is a key part of the filming process.

So when you ask if scaffolding is used in the film and television industry, the answer is a resounding yes. Let’s take a look at some unique and pioneering ways our industry is used in one of the most glamorous industries.

To Perform Stunts

We start with potentially the most obvious use of scaffolding on the big and little screens. Because scaffolding offers evaluated heights, it provides the perfect opportunity to perform stunts at a much higher vantage point.

Accompanying this is the fact that because incredible health and safety regulations are practiced in the UK scaffolding industry; stunts performed using this method offer a significantly lower chance of the stunt going astray and therefor a lower chance of injury.

Getting The All Important High Angle

High angles are one of the most in important shots in any film is the high angle. Meant to showcase the lack of power of individual in the shot; how the shot is practically made might not be at the forefront of viewer’s mind.

A commonly used technique is for the camera operator to stand high amongst the top of the scaffolding and shoot the camera down towards the focus object or actor.

Lightning

If the lighting in a scene is not correct, the scene can fail in what it is trying to achieve. To counteract this; some lights are suspended atop of a scaffolding construction.

Easily Moveable Construction

Due to the nature of the filming industry, there is probably no need for a permanent scaffolding fixture.

Because of this, the film and television industry rely heavily on easy to erect and easy to move scaffolding types. This might indicate that frame and brace or even cantilever scaffolding will be more frequently used in this industry. This is largely due to the time efficiency and practically of both types of footing support.
